Victoria Cross a worthy tribute to Burnie-born hero

Today’s announcement that Burnie-born Corporal Cameron Stewart Baird will be posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross is a welcome tribute to an Australian hero.

Corporal Baird will become the 100th Australian serviceman to be awarded the VC, the 14th Tasmanian and indeed the first Tasmanian since the end of the First World War.

Many of these awards were made to men who, like Corporal Baird, died in the action in which their bravery was recognised.

Corporal Baird made the ultimate sacrifice while leading Commandos in a close quarter battle with insurgents in Afghanistan on June 22 last year.

His actions enabled his team to prevail and his comrades to be kept safe.

Lest we forget.
